Hospital designers face the same challenges encountered in most commercial building design: assuring energy efficiency in design and use, incorporating responsible sustainability, and satisfying diverse use requirements. In addition, they seek to create an environment conducive to patient recovery. Heat Mirror® products provide powerful design tools that allow designers to realize these demanding requirements. | Project: San Joaquin Hospital Location: French Camp, CA Architect: Stone Marraccini & Patterson Solution: Heat Mirror 33, 77/Cle |
Heat Mirror glass offers superior thermal performance, with U-Factors potentially below 0.10, while at the same time employing selective coatings to provide outstanding solar shading performance. Not only do these energy related performance characteristics support energy efficient design, lowering capital and operating costs, but they also play an important role in creating a comfortable patient environment. Occupant comfort is a concern in most design efforts, but in hospitals the need for occupant comfort is magnified because inactive people are more environmentally sensitive and because patient comfort can have a direct impact on patient recovery. Because of Heat Mirror's outstanding thermal performance, Heat Mirror glass can be much warmer than low-e coated glass with interior temperatures over 60 deg F, making it more comfortable in the winter, and much less susceptible to condensation, an important consideration in high humidity environments. Condensation can be damaging to structures and can also foster mold and bacteria with potentially negative health impacts. In the summer Heat Mirror's solar shading properties help reduce the stuffiness caused by excessive solar gain, while at the same time reducing mechanical cooling loads. Because Heat Mirror products have a suspended middle film, they provide greater acoustical protection than typical double pane windows. Reducing exterior ambient noise pollution helps foster the restful recuperative environment sought in hospital facilities. Heat Mirror delivers superior energy efficiency and improves comfort in the designed environment significantly, making it the ideal glass for hospital and other health related facilities.
